Weekly Brain Candy | May 03

May 3, 2019

This is the segment where I share with you the exciting things I’m watching and listening to this week. Since editing thousands of photos at a time can get monotonous and mind numbing after a while, I often listen to podcasts or watch a movie/show that doesn’t require too much attention while editing. Every week or two, I’ll be sharing the highlights of what kept me entertained. Hope you find this interesting, and maybe even helpful when you’re deciding what to watch or listen to next.

Secret Life of Weddings

This is a podcast dedicated to disaster wedding stories. If you’re currently planning a wedding and are worried about things that could go wrong, I would definitely give this a listen. It will not only serve as a caution against what not to do, but also give you peace of mind because nothing as terrible as *that* will happen on your wedding day!

Lisa and Rebecca are the two hosts and they do a great job of not only telling the stories, but also giving advice from the perspective of a seasoned wedding professionals. I would recommend starting from the beginning on this one, simply because there are some wedding saga stories over multiple episodes thrown in. Also, they talk a bit about their personal lives each episode and you slowly get to know these hilarious women as the show progresses.

Check out their podcast today, I promise you won’t regret it!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I’ve watched this movie twice now and it probably won’t be the last time. I love how many British dramas are on Netflix these days! If you love British tv and films, you will definitely enjoy this. I would consider myself a slight Anglophile since I am quite charmed by most things British.

Set just after WWII, the plot centers around a female author who receives a letter that draws her to the English island of Guernsey. She gets to know the people of the Island and the literary and Potato Peel Society, and falls in love with the life there. I fell in love with the costumes, especially hers. Watching 1940’s and 50’s movies make me think I was born in the wrong era. Though I do enjoy the rights for women in these modern times.

Then go add it you your watchlist on Netflix immediately.

Queer Eye

I never really watched the first queer eye but I started watching the new one on simply out of curiosity, and because Netflix promotes hardcore. I was genuinely surprised how much I loved it. To quote the trailer: “The original show was fighting for tolerance, our fight is for acceptance.”

It’s great that they chose to base the show in the South East of the US. I feel that there are a lot of stereotypes around southerners, especially people who live in more rural communities. This show has given me a deeper understanding of their life, it makes me feel more empathetic towards that lifestyle and break down some of my own prejudices. What also stands out to me is how well the guys break down stereotypes of what it means to be gay, and help people understand their perspective and culture a bit more. They do so in a very gentle, guiding way. Nothing feels like an agenda being forced on the other person. It is a humanizing show on so many levels.

This show leaves me feeling hopeful that with a little conversation and understanding we can find common ground with opposing sides in our very divided country.

If you haven’t watched yet, definitely add it to your Netflix queue.

Have you listened to or watched any of these? What are your thoughts? I would love to hear what you thought in the comments.
