StoryCorps | Record the stories of your loved ones

May 13, 2020

Have you ever heard of StoryCorps?

You may know the podcast where you can hear stories of friends and relatives as they talk to each other about life, asking questions both big and small.

However, this organization is so much more than just another podcast.

Their mission is to “preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world…and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters.”

Maybe you can see why I am drawn to them.

For a few years now, I have been donating 5% of my profit from each family session to StoryCorps. I feel that they do with audio what I aim to do with my photographs.

They started in 2003 with one “storybooth” in Grand Central Station, NYC. People would grab someone they know, go into the booth, and easily record a conversation together, asking questions to get to know the other just a little bit deeper.

StoryCorps has grown and evolved over the years and I am writing today to tell you about this brand new means of recording that they just launched.

It’s a special platform where you can honor a family member by learning a bit more about their story via a recorded zoom call.

You get a copy of the recording, plus the audio and a still photo from each interview goes into the archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Go check it out on the StoryCorps Connect website. There they give you super detailed instructions on how to conduct and record an interview.

So, what are you waiting for?

Now is the perfect time to get to know your loved ones a little better. Instead of simply calling your mom to see how she’s doing, call and ask her what she was like as a child, or what her biggest struggle in life has been. You may be surprised at the answer you get.

If you do, I would love to hear what you think and how the conversation went!

P.S. The super talented event photographer Kathleen Sheffer hired me to photograph this session of her family at the holidays. It is always an honor to be hired by fellow photographers, and I had a blast getting to know her family and document their time together.
