In-home Maternity Photos
When Simple is Exactly What You’re Looking For
When Stephanie reached out about booking a maternity session, she started with this gem: Looking for a Maternity photoshoot (but not a weird one?) I’ll be honest – I laughed out loud. And then my heart skipped a beat because I knew immediately we were a great fit.
That one line captured exactly what I’ve been dreaming about creating for folks in this season of life. Maternity photos that feel intimate, cozy, beautifully ordinary… and still yours.

Because yes, sweeping gowns in windswept fields are stunning. I admire photographers who pull that style off with elegance and vision. But for me – and for many of my clients – that just doesn’t reflect their real life. And when it comes to documenting this stage of life, I believe real matters most.
Beauty does not have a single Definition
You don’t have to twirl in chiffon to have beautiful maternity photos. (Though try and stop me from twirling if a dress has good movement!)
Everyone deserves their own version of what makes them feel exalted, especially when you’re in your final trimester. But posing an expecting parent, standing half dressed in a meadow, serenely gazing into the sunset has never felt like it tells the full story of this experience. It does not match the MAGIC I’ve witnessed in real homes: the richness of two people sitting side-by-side, hands on the belly, waiting for kicks and talking about the unknowns. Moments that feel grounded and honest.
That’s the work that lights me up.
With Stephanie and Tim, we crafted something that felt like them. Not a styled Pinterest shoot, but a peek into their life before their daughter arrived.
Three Ways to Make Your
Maternity Session Feel Like YOU
1. Start with What You Love to Do Together
At the start of planning a session, I send a questionnaire that helps you dive deep and get to the heart of what feels most special. I ask things like:
– A typical Saturday or Sunday in your house, what does that look like?
– What do you love most about your home?
– What are you most looking forward to in parenthood?
For Stephanie and Tim, that meant cortado for her and pour-over coffee for him paired with quiet conversation. Reading while Tim played on the piano, and their cat loafed nearby. No props, no fuss – just their life, paused in the frame.
2. Embrace Your Home, Just As It Is
Worried your home doesn’t look Pinterest perfect? I hear that from clients all the time. But guess what? Your home is merely the backdrop- your connection is the star.
Comfort resides in familiar spaces. Stephanie and Tim’s living room, cat boxes and all, was the perfect canvas because it meant something to them. Each detail carries weight when we stop forcing perfection and start capturing presence.
3. Add a Personal Detail that Tells Part of Your Story
One of my favorite parts of their session: an at home ultrasound! Tim has access to an ultrasound machine through his work and they will occasionally check in on baby to say hi and watch her move. This routine with Stephanie symbolizes their care, their connection, their wonder. Including that part of their life added depth and a touch of awe.
I’m always looking for these kinds of details. Maybe for you it’s singing to your belly, walks to your favorite ice cream shop to satisfy a craving, or another quiet ritual that you might not have time for very soon. A good session doesn’t replicate trends – it reflects reality.
Why This Matters
Even if you don’t think of yourself as “a photo person,” I promise: you deserve to remember this time.
It’s not just about documenting the belly (though yes, the belly is important). It’s about remembering the last chapter as a two-person family. It’s about giving your future self – and your child – a window into who you were, together, on the threshold of change.
Let’s Capture What Matters Most
If you’re expecting and the thought of a traditional maternity session makes you cringe a little – let’s talk. We can craft something reflective, cozy, and meaningful. One that doesn’t feel like playing dress-up, and instead feels like you.
