How to pick your family session outfits
You did it! You booked the family photo session, now what the heck should you wear?
Below, I share with you a few helpful tips to consider when dressing your family for photos.
Wear what’s comfy
Above all, clothes should be comfortable! I will ask you to sit on the ground, stand together, snuggle up, maybe even chase the kids a bit (or visa versa). You want to be able to move around without fidgeting with the clothes too much and have the kids feel free to move around too.
Pick a statement outfit
A good process I have found is to pick one outfit to be your primary and base everyone else’s colors and patterns to coordinate with it. This could be a dress that makes mom feel absolutely fabulous or the cute outfit grandma got your little one for Christmas.
Don’t try and “match”
Coordinating can be really loose guidelines. Try dressing in a good mix of patterns and solids. This makes for great photos! Just don’t clash with your main piece.
Neutrals are always a good choice
Try to include a few neutrals. (think khaki, denim, tan, white) Pants are usually a good neutral but if you are putting together multiple family members try to include a neutral shirt or two as well. These are good ways to balance other patterns and colors in the photograph.
Don’t go too crazy
You want to wear clothes you love but not let the outfit become the subject. These photos are all about you and your connection together after all!
General Don’ts
Things to avoid: tiny checkered patterns (they just don’t photograph well), large logos and/or lettering, and trying to match exact colors.
Little extras: Bring a “just in case” outfit for the kids. Dirt and spills happen, best to be prepared, or embrace the mess! Also, makeup should be slightly more than you wear on an average day. Think “going out to a nice lunch” look.
