Sonoma Winery Proposal | Gundlach Bundschu

April 15, 2017

Sitting in my car outside the winery, 5 minutes before “go time”, I’m watching as rain pounds my windshield outside. The clouds had been shifting rapidly all day so I knew there was a good chance that it would pass over rather quickly. I start pointing at the sky saying out loud, “You cut it out! I need 10 minutes to get this photo, just give me 10 minutes!” Sure enough, 3 minutes later the rain slows to a mist and I venture outside with my gear to wait for my subjects to emerge from the wine cave.

They’re late finishing their tour though, and I am pacing outside, full of nerves that the rain will start again. Luckily, a winery worker was outside and I was able to ask her for details about the wine tour. Mid convo she excitedly whispers, “Oh there they are!”, so I leap into action. Rain coming down a bit harder I speak my rehearsed line and manage to act natural as I pose them under a tree with some decent cover from the rain. This is his cue to pop the question. He hesitates for long enough to make me wonder if it’s going to happen before finally grabbing her hand and getting down on his knee.

She was so surprised! I love being able to capture these big life moments for people, an image they’ll be able to look back on and remember the excitement of this time in their lives. Luckily we had enough of a break from the rain to wander around the winery and even capture some dramatic vineyard shots. I enjoyed getting to know Jon and Anna during our session, they have a relaxed but playful dynamic together that was so much fun to photograph. Congratulations you two!
